Booze, Baseball, and another "B"

Yesterday on Yahoo's frontpage they featured an article about Spider-Man revealing his secret identity.

My initial thought was something along the lines of "movie news...?" but no, I was way off. Yahoo was busy promoting the newest issue of "Civil War," Marvel's newest money-grab/mini-series.

... How does that make the frontpage? I guess something doesn't have to be really important to make the frontpage of Yahoo, I just think it's funny that something so trivial makes the frontpage (I should also say that I feel as though Marvel comic canon ended in the early nineties, and the stuff now is slightly better than fan-fiction).

To make matters worse, they talk about how Civil War (the series) is an allegory about civil liberties, and their erosion. C'mon, civil liberties stories in comics? I think it's a stretch.

Also of note, I think the artwork for the pic they selected is awful. I miss Gil Kane and John Romita (Frank Miller had some good stuff too). Hell, McFarlane too.

Is this a rant about Yahoo, paid media advertising, or Marvel comics? I don't know; but I do know that all of them right now are not on my good side.

  • Keith and I were talking about Civil War quite a bit, when you were up here. So far, I really like how Marvel's handled the whole 'civil liberties' allegory. It's been surprisingly even-handed. Of course, I'm sure in the long run, there's going to be a continuity "reset", re-hiding Spidey's identity and backpedaling on everything in this storyline (or Dr Doom/Magneto will be revealed to be behind one of the sides, thus revealing it as "eeeeevil"). But so far, they've been doing well with it.

Not that this is going to convince you to check out any of the issues. So I've just wasted valuable time I could have spent downloading porn. Damn.
