Double take....

File this in the "what the....?!" category.

Juan Pablo Montoya, who is my favorite F1 driver (because I had to choose someone other than Schumacher, who wins all the time), has decided to move to NASCAR.

For me, this is like Barry Sanders retiring. While it's true that Montoya has shown pretty poor form this year, the guy is solid and can win races. I think that Ferrari would have been well served to have dumped Massa and signed up Montoya, but if they really are ready to announce Raikonen as Schumacher's successor, then Montoya wouldn't be a good #2. That being said, I think that Montoya could have been an F1 world champ, he just isn't doing well at all this year. Maybe he'll still come back, but I think it's going to be a really tough sell. There's been talk a couple of times of Jeff Gordon trying out F1, but the fact of the matter is, people in F1 look down on NASCAR and it's very unlikely that Montoya is going to be able to find a ride to come back to.

It's tough to say how well Montoya will do in NASCAR; he's succeeded in every form of racing he's participated in (winning CART series, Indy 500, many F1 races, and was an F3000 champ too, among other things), and to put it quite simply, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to turn left. I think it'd be great to see Juan Pablo win the Nextel Cup in his first full season, but that is a bit of a stretch.
